Procedure on Grant

There is a sizeable grant fee to be paid to the EPO. At the same time, the claims have to be translated into the French and German languages.

The European Patent grants the patent in the sense of giving opinion that the invention patentable. Some countries deem grant to have taken place under their law once the EPO grant has occurred. Other countries require additional actions, such as appointment of a local address for service, translation of the claims and translation of the entire specification.

Our letter reporting acceptance for grant sets out the requirements and estimates their cost, both for EPO Grant and for national registration.

If your client requires protection simply UK, France and Germany, then the EPO requirements and local renewal only are required. For some further countries such as the Netherlands translation of the claims are required. For other countries again, such as Italy, translation of the entire specification is required. We can handle all this for you.
